授業の概要
/Course outline
The main focus of this course is to build upon work done in Listening and Reading 2, giving students more practice in both listening and reading. In the reading part of the course, students will learn skills to help them read academic texts and they will build academic vocabulary. In the listening part of the course, students will get an introduction to listening to authentic mathematics lectures. A textbook will be used for the reading part of the course, while the listening materials will be made available online through a Moodle server.

This course will be organized on a Moodle server. Every student must enrol in the course through Moodle. (Go to the link at http://moodle.u-aizu.ac.jp/moodle/ and then choose the correct LR3 course).
教科書
/Textbook(s)
Making Connections 2 (Second Edition), published by Cambridge University Press. ISBN: 9781107628748. This textbook is available through the University Bookstore. The same book is used in Listening & Reading 3 and Listening & Reading 4. In addition, listening materials will be distributed on the class Moodle website. Every week, please print out the jpg files (listening scripts) from the Moodle website and bring them to class. That way you can make notes directly on the course materials. The listening lectures are based on Dr. Arthur Benjamin's The Joy of Mathematics series from The Teaching Company.
成績評価の方法・基準
/Grading method/criteria
Students must attend class regularly. There will be short quizzes and/or other homework to do outside of class every week. Quizzes will be administered using Moodle. There will be both a midterm examination and a final examination.

Participation:  10%

Midterm Examination:  20%
Final Examination:  30%

This course teaches students to speak and write English at an intermediate
to advanced level. Course focus is on preparing students for careers as
computer scientists. The course will focus on critical thinking abilities

/Course outline
This course teaches students how to write a graduation thesis in English. Students learn the form and purpose of each section of a research thesis in computer science or related fields. Students also will practice writing and receive correction and feedback from instructors. In addition, students will receive guidance on how to successfully present their research findings orally and visually.

Students will, using English, be able to:
a) begin their research presentation with an appropriate greeting
b) initiate eye contact with audience
c) coordinate slides with spoken information
d) flexibly address the needs of the audience in regard to time and comprehension

writing
Students will, using English, be able to:
a) write a thesis according to the format and structure common to the field of computer science or other appropriate field
b) produce an abstract that include methods and results
c) produce an introduction that includes research purpose and necessary background information for reader
d) write a methods section clearly enough to allow duplication of the experiment
d) discuss the results in a way that helps the reader to understand their significance
e) cite and refer to the work of other scholars in a way that recognizes the work of predecessors.

Schedule:
Weeks 1-3 - Purpose, audience, overview, and sections of research theses; references, citations, and plagiarism
Weeks 4-7 - Introduction, Methods, Results/Discussion
Weeks 8-10 - Conclusions, Acknowledgments, Title, Abstract
Weeks 11-15 - Figures and captions, approaches to oral presentation, Powerpoint design, Editing, revising and checking text; assessment
