Reading and Writing 1 teaches students to read and write English at a level suitable for freshmen at University of Aizu. |

READING Students will, using English, be able to: Read for main ideas Read for details Read and recognize different text types Make predictions before reading Use context to understand unfamiliar words while reading Read a chart to obtain information while reading Take notes to retain information Identify the author’s purpose for writing a text WRITING Students will, using English, be able to: Write paragraphs Plan before writing Write a topic sentence to convey ideas clearly Write a descriptive paragraph Use freewriting to brainstorm ideas before writing Write a paragraph with supporting ideas Write an opinion paragraph with supporting details Write a paragraph describing a process Use time order words to make stops in a process clear |

The main focus of this course is to build upon work done in Listening and Reading 2, giving students more practice in both listening and reading. In the reading part of the course, students will learn skills to help them read academic texts and they will build academic vocabulary. In the listening part of the course, students will get an introduction to listening to authentic mathematics lectures. A textbook will be used for the reading part of the course, while the listening materials will be made available online through a Moodle server. |

Making Connections 2 (Second Edition), published by Cambridge University Press. ISBN: 9781107628748. This textbook is available through the University Bookstore. The same book is used in Intermediate English A and Intermediate English B. In addition, listening materials will be distributed on the class Moodle website. Every week, please print out the jpg files (listening scripts) from the Moodle website and bring them to class. That way you can make notes directly on the course materials. The listening lectures are based on Dr. Arthur Benjamin's The Joy of Mathematics series from The Teaching Company. |

This course teaches students to speak and write English at an intermediate to advanced level. Course focus is on preparing students for careers as computer scientists. Course content will cover topics including critical reasoning in English communication, intercultural awareness and basic English communication at university campus and other formal contexts. |

Students will learn oral and writing strategies that allow them to communicate in English as computer science professionals. Attainment targets: Speaking: Students will, using English, be able to: a) describe a process used in computer science b) present (portions) of a process, guide, brochure or other document and respond to questions from audience c) give a reasoned opinion, with evidence, on a familiar topic Writing: Students will, using English, be able to: a) write an internal problem/solution memo b) send emails to audiences outside an organisation c) produce (in teams) a user guide/instruction manual d) produce (in teams) a technical/product/marketing brochure To support the above, students will leave the course with familiarity of: Rhetorical choices to reach different audiences Grammatical choices to indicate probability, causality, certainty Familiarity with the genres and formats of texts commonly used in organisations. |

This course teaches students how to write a graduation thesis in English. Students learn the form and purpose of each section of a research thesis in computer science or related fields. Students also will practice writing and receive correction and feedback from instructors. In addition, students will receive guidance on how to successfully present their research findings orally and visually. |

Attainment targets speaking Students will, using English, be able to: a) begin their research presentation with an appropriate greeting b) initiate eye contact with audience c) coordinate slides with spoken information d) flexibly address the needs of the audience in regard to time and comprehension writing Students will, using English, be able to: a) write a thesis according to the format and structure common to the field of computer science or other appropriate field b) produce an abstract that include methods and results c) produce an introduction that includes research purpose and necessary background information for reader d) write a methods section clearly enough to allow duplication of the experiment d) discuss the results in a way that helps the reader to understand their significance e) cite and refer to the work of other scholars in a way that recognizes the work of predecessors.
