This course introduces how human languages are designed/structured. Specifically, it will focus on the word, sentence and sound structure of various languages in the world showing structural diversity of human languages as it introduces some basic concepts and terms used in linguistics. Also, some interesting topics related to human language (e.g., “language acquisition”, “language and brain” and “language and thought”) will be discussed. |

[Content:* Language:*] This course is a contrastive analysis of the phonology and phonetics (the sound systems) of Japanese and English. Each language's inventory of sound segments will be compared systematically, as well as the syllable structure and some phonological rules. Students will be taught to produce (pronounce) and perceive the differences between sounds in these two languages. In order to assist students in differentiating between English and Japanese sounds, both ultrasound and acoustic analysis software will be used in the classroom. |

[This class will be offered in the flipped-classroom style] Students will analyze sentences at the micro level and manually draw tree diagrams both in class and as assignments. We will start from simple to more complex sentences and give enough time to learn diagramming techniques. |

Assignments will usually be due the following class after they are assigned. They will be posted on Moodle. This means you have one week to complete most assignments. However, for assignment 2, you will have two weeks and for assignment 4, you will have the entire Winter Break (3 weeks). There will be 5 homework assignments, each worth 6%. Grade Breakdown: Homework Assignments 30% Midterm Exam 25% Final Exam 35% Participation & Attendance 10% I will take attendance at the start of each class and your Participation and Attendance grade will reflect your attendance record. Your grade for “Participation & Attendance” will be affected if you are late. When I take attendance, I give you a score for each class. You will receive 100% if you are on time, 50% if you arrive late, and 0% if you are absent. Your participation & attendance grade will reflect your attendance score over the entire semester as well as your participation in class activities. |

[Content** Language*] This course encourages students to look at language musically. The relationship between music and language will be discussed and important aspects of spoken language such as intonation, pitch fluctuation and syllable stress in English will be examined. Basic concepts of music theory will be introduced and students will learn to score melodic contours using Sibelius. Through practical participation in vocal, instrumental and percussion-based musical ensembles, students will develop greater confidence when producing spoken language. |

Engaging digital applications though the English language, this course draws students’ attention to the commonalities and rich variation that exists among the cultures of the world. Computers will facilitate the examination of world music from the point of view of ethnomusicology. Students will be encouraged to apply critical thinking to historical, linguistic, sociological, geographic and purely musical processes. In this way, they will also hone their spoken, written and receptive English ability. Beginning by examining the core concepts of this important musicological field, the course goes on to cover significant traditions within a broadly representative selection of locations throughout the world. The global focus is followed by a more local one with students turning their attention to the musical and cultural life in their own hometowns and current community. Students will engage in E-field work, an increasingly vital tool in research into the music of the world. |

[Content:** Language:*] The course aims at enriching the students’ abilities to use English grammar constructions functioning in academic English and encourages the students to apply their theoretical knowledge of grammar into their everyday verbal communication and TOEIC/TOEFL taking process. |

By the end of the course, students will: 1) use all of the verb tenses and be able to practice tenses in real life situations 2) transform active sentences into passive sentences and vice versa 3) show familiarity with the structure and use of articles and nouns 4) identify and use participles and adjectives; comparative and superlative forms 5) recognize and use connectors 6) recognize and use gerunds and infinitives |
