授業の概要 /Course outline |
Engaging digital applications though the English language, this course draws students’ attention to the commonalities and rich variation that exists among the cultures of the world. Computers will facilitate the examination of world music from the point of view of ethnomusicology. Students will be encouraged to apply critical thinking to historical, linguistic, sociological, geographic and purely musical processes. In this way, they will also hone their spoken, written and receptive English ability. Beginning by examining the core concepts of this important musicological field, the course goes on to cover significant traditions within a broadly representative selection of locations throughout the world. The global focus is followed by a more local one with students turning their attention to the musical and cultural life in their own hometowns and current community. Students will engage in E-field work, an increasingly vital tool in research into the music of the world. |
授業の目的と到達目標 /Objectives and attainment goals |
(1) To broaden students’ cultural awareness with the help of computers. (2) To help students hone their spoken, written and receptive English ability through discussion, multimedia activities and by engaging with a breadth of relevant texts. (3) To help students develop critical thinking applying to historical, linguistic, sociological, geographic and purely musical processes. (4) To help students understand and appreciate the cultural richness already present in their day to day domestic environment. |

授業の概要 /Course outline |
You will practice both "extensive" and "intensive" reading in this class. Extensive reading (ER), the activity that you had in the first year, is believed to improve overall language ability if enough number of words is read. In this course, students will read more than 40,000 words of graded readers and write and present a book report at the end of the quarter. Intensive reading is a way of reading difficult text by analyzing the structure and meaning, possible with a dictionary. This course will attempt to improve your overall reading fluency by reading English in these two ways. |
授業の目的と到達目標 /Objectives and attainment goals |
This class is to develop reading fluency (reading and understanding English text quickly). The goal of this course is to read more than 40,000 words in three months and present a book report as well as getting use to reading academic text such as abstracts of research papers. |
