/Course outline
Course Outline: This is a Schoology-based course based on the fundamentals of information and website design and critical thinking. As part of this course, we will examine how users read on the web, how authors should write their web pages, and, accordingly, how to design rich, appropriate content for web sites. The purpose of this course will be to analyze and report on several design and publishing software, document editors, graphics, and presentation software. The focus of the course will be on 3D printing related processes including 3D scanning, CAD design, 3D Printing, the future of the technology etc. Students will learn the basics of web-based document design in constructing web sites. By analyzing how on-line communities organize, use, and distribute knowledge and information, we will evaluate and build web sites that communicate simply and effectively. Students will also focus on the use of website analysis questionnaires and other testing techniques for making websites usable.

To learn the basics of visual design and production as they relate to online images, videos and animations.
To learn how to perform usability testing for various websites.

This course is designed for advanced students at University of Aizu who expect to write in their future employment. This class will focus on the difficult task of meeting readers' needs while simultaneously representing your best interests and those of your employer. To meet that end, the assignments will cover a variety of tasks produced under different circumstances, some done quickly during class and some polished and perfected over time. Students completing the semester's work should see a visible improvement in their writing,especially in terms of clarity and precision.

Content: This course introduces how languages are used in the Manga world, and compares them with the languages in the real world. Manga in both Japanese and English will be examined and compared in terms of linguistics features and non-verbal expressions.
Students also learn various English expressions and how to write narrations by creating their own Manga in English.

Course Outline:
This course is designed to help you develop skills that will enable you to produce clear and effective scientific and technical documents. We will focus on basic principles of good writing-which scientific and technical writing shares with other forms of writing-and on types of documents common in scientific and technical fields and organizations.
As part of this technical writing and design through group communication course, we will use communication skill games and research with LEGO and 3D Printing to improve communication within your team, and help you write design documents. Prototyping with LEGO and 3D Printing will help us learn something in a new way. We will learn about the use of such tools for engineering team-based communication, collaborative product development, planning and design, analysis and execution. For class assignments, we will design innovative products with LEGO, write and speak about the design in English, and work towards group analysis and peer-review.
As a team, we will talk about what happened? What worked well? What didn’t work so well? What about the team communication? Could we use LEGO and 3D Printing to learn about another topic? Could we use a “toy” to learn about history, science, art or math? Could we design a futuristic product with LEGO and 3D Printing?
We will design products, focus on developing technical reports on product design, prepare recommendations and constructive criticism (product reviews) for improvement, and make digital storytelling-based presentation about the designed product.

2nd Week:
• 1st Session: The Technical Writing Process: Planning & Researching, Organizing and Drafting, Designing, Revising & Editing
• 2nd Session: Individual Assignment – Researching the use of LEGO in Manufacturing and Education and Report Writing

3rd Week:
• 1st Session: Readers and Context of Use: Profiling your readers (audience analysis), understanding contexts of use, adapting to cross-cultural communication contexts.
• 2nd Session: Group Assignment – 1st Creative Factory Project: Product Assembly with LEGO; preparing Google Sites webpage about assembly process, designing technical presentation, and design peer-review based on technical rubrics.

4th Week:
• 1st Session: Organizational strategies for technical documents: Using genres to organize information, Outlining the document plan and brainstorming, organizing and drafting the introduction, body, and conclusion.
• 2nd Session: Group Assignment – Writing an online user manual for a CAD-based design context. LEGO assembly assignment based on Tinkercad and BuildwithChrome.

5th Week:
• 1st Session: Designing documents and interfaces: 5 principles of design – balance, alignment, grouping, consistency and contrast; designing websites.
• 2nd Session: Individual Assignment – Midterm Exam (Document design, organizing, audience and context analysis and product design)

6th Week:
• 1st Session: Creating and using graphics: Guidelines for using graphics, displaying data with graphs, tables and charts; using pictures, drawings and video
• 2nd Session: Group Assignment - Designing a technical presentation with statistics on the use of 3D Printing (based on very specific guidelines on the use of 3D printers and technical rubrics)

7th Week:
• 1st Session: Writing technical descriptions and instructions in procedural documents – planning, organizing and drafting instructions, using style in instructions, revising, editing and proofreading.
• 2nd Session: Group Assignment – Installing a CUBIFY 3D Printer in the lab and preparing to 3D print an object from Autodesk 123D Design – 2nd Creative Factory Project on writing procedural instructions.

8th Week:
• 1st Session: Continue working on the 2nd Creative Factory Project (in-class feedback from instructor about writing procedures and document usability)
• 2nd Session: Final Course Oral Presentation (Group) – Technical descriptions and procedures, use of statistical data, researching a topic on 3D Printing and writing about it.

Notes: Minor alternations in the course content might be necessary based on immediate needs.

Assessment Guidelines
• A+ = Shows fluency in both language use and ideas
• A = Very well written paper with clear ideas and clear language but with minor errors
• B = Macro issues (purpose, organization, paragraph structure) are all strong but micro issues (grammar, sentence structure) may be problematic.
• B- = Problems exist with macro issues and poor sentence construction make meaning difficult to follow (extensive use of translation software).
• C = Paper shows some evidence of understanding of the material presented in class.
• F = Paper does not demonstrate any understanding of macro issues, and significant micro errors make understanding difficult, word limit ignored, extensive use of translation software, largely incomplete submissions etc.

People are using English in complex ways for different purposes in today’s globalized world. This course is an introduction to the implications of the global spread and role of English in current globalization. It examines the general causes and effects of the spread of English, including its relationship with human migration, global economy, media and technology. The contemporary status and forms of different varieties of Englishes, including Asian, European, American and Pacific are also considered.

1. Writing assignments
The students are asked to write two essays (around 1500-2000 words), each worth 20%. The deadline for Essay 1 is Class 10 and Essay 2 is Class 15. Topics should be related to each topic we cover during the classes.
2. Oral assignments
The students are asked to present a paper (around 15 minutes) on PowerPoint, worth 20%. Topics should be related to each topic we cover during the classes.

b) have some understanding of other prominent cross-cultural research and theories, including high/low context communication and orientation to time;
c) have an understanding of research-based insights into Japanese culture and communication styles
d) be able to compare and contrast their own communication styles with those of other cultures

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of class. Students who arrive on time will receive 1 point for “Attendance and participation;” those who arrive late will receive 0.5 points, and those who are absent will receive 0 points for that class. In addition, failure to complete homework on time or to actively participate in class may lead to points being deducted from the “Attendance and participation” category.
