/Course outline
As the original word philosophia shows, the western philosophy began with “love for wisdom”. The great minds have produced thorough philosophical thinking, and their thinking has become classic until today. There are two ways to study philosophy – one is to trace such historical developments in chronological order, the other is think directly on the themes and solutions in philosophy. This course takes the latter, direct way, and refers to the historical context as long as it helps us understand the problem.
Since the 17th century, when the modern natural sciences emerged, various sciences have departed from philosophy. Natural sciences have developed and specialized so rapidly that today, or in near future, any problem could be resolved by scientific means – so we might expect. However, since western philosophy was born in ancient Greek, various problems have long been discussed until today. There are other problems which were created with the birth of modern natural sciences. Then, has there been no progress in philosophy over 2500 years? Is philosophy doomed to be resolved into sciences? These are also the themes philosophers are interested in.
For better or worse philosophical problems have seldom been resolved, even within the limited range of themes this course touches on. So the important thing in studying philosophy is not to expect a perfect answer to the question, but widen your world while learning new standpoints and ways of thinking.

The human mind, because of its width and depth, is sometimes referred to as a “microcosm.” This “microcosm” in every individual is continuously expanding from his/her birth to death with various bright rays emitting from time to time during the process of expansion. How the microcosm expands and emits bright rays defers between individuals. However, there are certain general rules applicable to the mind. I wonder how many people are aware of their own microcosm, how it has been developed and how it works.
I would like for this course to be a good opportunity for students to understand or remind themselves of this “microcosm,” or the mind, how wonderful we, as human-beings, are, and how diverse our capabilities are. There are many approaches to understanding of the mind. This course will focus on an empirical science-based approach (a way of thinking supported by facts). In particular, features of components and functions of the mind will be studied from the viewpoint that each individual lives with an integrated background of three different histories, which are the “history of the species (evolution),” “history of society,” and “personal history.”
This approach will lead to understanding of humanity, which is important in understanding of “other people” and “self.”

*Lecture on ancient Chinese literature and Chinese characters. Also explain about ancient Chinese poetry and story behind the scenes.

The gender and sexuality studies use social-scientific approaches to matters related to the sexes such as biological sexes, psychosexuality and sociosexuality, sexual desires, and sexual behaviors.

In the introduction, students will learn the overall territory of the gender and sexuality studies. Afterwards, students will learn three main themes; 1) modern family and working females, 2) matters related to gender and sexuality, and 3) modern history of homosexuality in Japan.

1) Modern family and working females: Students will learn about sex-role “male should work outside, female should do housework and take care of children at home” and modern family which emphasizes an interest to children and family ties at household.
Moreover students will have an opportunity to think about how the norm surrounding a modern family is interrupting working female. On the other hand, students will learn the circumstances of the gender norm which shapes the way of life for males as well as that for females.

2) Matters related to gender and sexuality: Based on autonomy of sex, students will learn that everybody has the inherent right of his/her own sexuality which should not be affected by others regardless of his/her gender. However, in the reality, there is the gender asymmetry. Students will learn that sexuality of females is affected by males.
In order to establish tight relationship as a member of the society without any gender concerns, understanding about the autonomy of sex is inevitable.

3) Modern history of homosexuality in Japan: Homosexuality will be featured amongst sexual minorities. A method based on historical sociology will be employed.
Recently, same-sex marriage and same-sex partnership system have been discussed in Japan. Students will learn that social problems will not be solved only by these factors and gender equality is necessary for it.

Since gender and sexuality are linked each other, they will be taught one by one at the class carefully.
/Objectives and attainment
goals
1) By learning the fundamental knowledge about modern family and employment of female, students will be able to think about what they can do for creating society that anyone can spend their lives in their own ways regardless sexual differences.

2) Knowing about the reality of sexual damages to females caused by gender asymmetry, students will be able to explain why autonomy of sex is essential.

3) Learning about homosexuality in Japanese modern history, students will be able to explain why having establishment of same-sex marriage and same-sex partnership system is insufficient as support for sexual minorities.

/Course outline
This course introduces principles of microeconomics which is one of two major branches, such as micro- and macro-economics, of economics. An economy consists of three major activities; i) producing goods, ii) consuming goods, and iii) exchanging goods. These activities are facilitated by a market in which individuals and firms voluntarily produce, exchange and consume goods. Students will learn the mechanism of the market and underlying individual level activities in the market.
/Objectives and attainment
goals
The critical idea of economics is to predict the outcome as a whole according to individuals’ decisions. This idea is applicable in various settings beyond economics. Let’s learn how to put theories into practice through this course.
/Class schedule
1. What is economics?
We will learn what economics and microeconomics are about. An overview of the course will be provided.
2. Gains from Trade
We will consider the simplest model of an economy, in which there are only two goods and two people. It will be illustrated how trade can benefit everyone in an economy.
3. Supply and Demand 1
Buyers in a market determine the demand for the product. We will learn demand curves in a market, and variables that can shift the demand curve. Sellers determine the supply of the product in a market. Similarly to demand curves, we will learn supply curves in a market, and variables that can shift the supply curve.
4. Supply and Demand 2
An equilibrium price balances quantity supplied and quantity demanded in a market. We will learn how price is set through decisions to buy or sell at the individual level.
5. Elasticity
Elasticity is a measure of responsiveness to changes in prices or incomes. We will learn a family of elasticity, including the price elasticity of demand and the income elasticity of demand.
6. Government Policies
We will learn cases the efficiency cannot be attained in a market due to government policies, e.g. a minimum wage.
7. Consumer and Producer Surplus
We will see how to measure benefits which consumers and producers receive from the existence of a market. Benefits for consumers and producers can be derived from demand and supply curves.
8. International Trade
Once trade is allowed, the domestic price of a good rises or falls to equal the price in the world market. We will learn the impact of international trade on the domestic price and quantity, and on consumer and producer surpluses.
9. Producers
The supply curve aggregates the supplies of individual producers (firms). We will learn the supply decisions each firm makes which constitute the supply curve.
10. Consumers
Similarly to the supply curve, the demand curve aggregates the demands of individual consumers. We will learn the consumers’ decisions to purchase goods.
11. Competitive Market
In a competitive market, each buyer and seller is a price taker. We will learn conditions of a competitive market and the supply curves in the short-run and the long-run.
12. Monopoly
A monopoly is a market in which there exists a single producer. A monopoly market is not competitive. We will learn how the price is set and how the traded quantity is changed in a monopoly market.
13. Oligopoly
When there exist only multiple producers, the market is called an oligopoly market. We will learn game theory to illustrate and understand the interdependence of firms’ decisions in an oligopoly market.
14. Externalities
Government action can sometimes improve on market outcomes. We will learn situations that markets fail to allocate resources efficiently and how government policies can potentially improve such situations.

/Course outline
This course provides lessons to learn how to use sociological concepts in your everyday life. The lecturer chooses sociological concepts which will be useful after graduating UoA.
The course is divided into three sections: human behaviors in online society, how to make money using “capitals”, and social norms which make people happy and unhappy. For example, editing articles in Wikipedia is called “collective action” in sociology. If you edit an article, you spend your time, however, other people can enjoy improved article. Therefore, most people will “freeride” even if they use Wikipedia every day, because they do not want to spend their own time. This research question is one of the most important one in sociology, and you may know the reason why many “Wikipedians” contribute if you take this course.
Although international students are welcome, you have to understand Japanese talks in lectures and discussions. Papers written in either Japanese or English will be accepted.

Computational methods have contributed to develop not only natural science but also recent researches on social science. For example, simulation models provided useful insights for problems of racial segregation and cooperation among people who conflict their interests. When we build a model of social phenomenon, we have to extract a simple mechanism of the seemingly complicated problem. This skill will be trained in this class and may help you to design simple structure of information systems in the future.
The lecturer explains fundamental structures of various simulation models in social sciences, and a participant implements those models. Note that you have to build programs and resolve technical issues by yourself.
