This course is mainly conducted online. This course teaches students basic English skills necessary for communication, achieving academic goals, and personal development at the University of Aizu. Through a variety of topics and activities, students will develop four language skills (i.e., reading, writing, listening and speaking) with emphasis on receptive skills. ***Important: All English courses for first-year students are extremely important for your success at the University of Aizu. We strongly recommend you to take all of them (Introductory English 1-4) regardless of your TOEIC score. The course includes the following components: • In-class activities: Participating actively in class activities and tasks is an important part of the course. • Homework assignments: Your instructor will assign homework to be done outside of class. These assignments are an important part of the course, and contribute to your overall final course grade. • Survival list: You must learn frequently used expressions in class and take quizzes based on the survival list. • Midterm & final exams: You must take these exams in order to pass this course. ***Important: In order to pass this course, students must also complete : • TOEIC e-learning: Students must finish the assigned number of lessons and get at least 65% correct at each quiz. • Vocabulary quizzes: Take assigned vocabulary quizzes online and achieve the required score. |

By the end of this course, students will be able to: • Read or listen to and understand classroom English and oral instructions (live or online) • Read and understand simple academic texts • Understand the structure of a paragraph, i.e. main idea and supporting details • Read and write short English email messages with acceptable grammar and construction (academic and non-academic) • Use spell checker properly • Write a sentence with acceptable grammar |

This course continues from the Introductory English 1 and Introductory English 2 courses taught in the first two quarters of the freshman year. Introductory English 3 aims to continue developing learners’ four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for general communication. In addition, the course aims to improve learners’ fluency with English; learners’ ability to engage in meaningful communicative interaction, and also further learners’ knowledge of the formal aspects of the English language, such as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. At the same time, learners will engage with a variety of content topics and themes, developing their ability to discuss issues and think critically. The course includes: •In-class activities- participating actively in class activities and tasks is an important part of the course. Your participation will be carefully monitored. It is also important for you to bring the course textbook to every class; not bringing the textbook will affect your class participation evaluation. If you have to miss a class for an important reason (such as illness, or a family emergency), you should contact your instructor in advance. •Vocabulary quizzes- there will be regular vocabulary quizzes throughout the course, based on words found in the course textbook. Your vocabulary quiz scores contribute to your overall final course grade. •Homework assignments- your instructor will sometimes assign homework to be done outside of class. These assignments are an important part of the course, and contribute to your overall final course grade. •Mid-term & final exams- exams will be administered twice for this course. Make-up exams will only be allowed for legitimate reasons (such as illness or a family emergency). ***Important: In order to pass this course, students must also complete: •TOEIC e-learning- students must successfully pass the quizzes of the assigned units. ***Combination of face-to-face classes and remote classes (see schedule below) Course description IE3 is an English course focused on writing and technical presentation skills. This course teaches students to speak and write English at an intermediate to advanced level. Course focus is on preparing students for careers as computer scientists. The course will focus on critical thinking abilities in specific contexts of use. Further, the course will prepare students to make conference presentations, speak diligently, make presentations articulately and learn online content management and delivery at an acceptable level. |

Schedule The 1st, 7th and the 14th class meeting will be held face-to-face in the classroom, as assigned. All other class meetings will happen through Zoom. Class Session Assignment 1 Course Introduction; Using Grammarly software for text editing; Introductory Forum Assignment 2 Read online articles on computer science topics and summarize major ideas in writing; short video speaking assignments (with notes). 3 Read online articles on computer science topics and summarize major ideas in writing; short in-class speaking assignments (without notes). 4 Identify 5 keywords in each of the articles read in W1-S2 & W2-S1 and re-write the summary using synonyms; re-phrase the sentences in the summary for novice readers. 5 Watch TED talks videos (only available from instructor panel) on a given topic in class (with subtitles ON) – Summarize what you heard/read (note-taking) 6 Watch TED talks videos on a given academic topic (link posted in Schoology) – write short summaries. Identify key words in the videos and re-write summary with synonyms. 7 Identify a topic in CS that you would like to research and search for articles from Google Scholar – write a thesis statement and summarize ideas for the selected articles. Draw a mind map representing your ideas for the topic. 8 Select graphics online (Google images) in support of your research topic – write text captions to describe the image and how it relates to your research statement; use concept map to represent ideas graphically 9 Design a technical presentation for your research topic and submit the link in Schoology for peer review comments (must follow instructions on organization, layout, text-graphics coordination etc.) 10 Verbally summarize the main ideas in the research (and present in class) with minimal readings from memos/note cards; verbally summarize the main ideas in a graphic. 11 Use Screencast-o-Matic to prepare the technical presentation with voice and face embedded and post in YouTube for peer review 12 Preparation of voice support for the technical presentation using alternative phrases/synonyms (not allowed to read the slides as voice support) 13 Lecture on poster creation; create a poster on the research topic for possible academic presentation 14 Using VoiceTube for learning English; work on poster creation Week # 8: Final Project Poster presentation * The order of assignments and course activities may vary based on the instructor. |

***This year, classes will be conducted primarily online. The primary aim of this course is to enable participants to write a graduation thesis that conforms to the university guidelines and expectations of supervisors. The form, function and content of the graduation thesis and its sections will be studied in detail. Participants will plan, draft, edit and revise their own graduation thesis throughout this course. The secondary aim is to plan, prepare and practice for the graduation thesis presentation. |
