This course is mainly conducted online. This course teaches students basic English skills necessary for communication, achieving academic goals, and personal development at the University of Aizu. Through a variety of topics and activities, students will develop four language skills (i.e., reading, writing, listening and speaking) with emphasis on receptive skills. ***Important: All English courses for first-year students are extremely important for your success at the University of Aizu. We strongly recommend you to take all of them (Introductory English 1-4) regardless of your TOEIC score. The course includes the following components: • In-class activities: Participating actively in class activities and tasks is an important part of the course. • Homework assignments: Your instructor will assign homework to be done outside of class. These assignments are an important part of the course, and contribute to your overall final course grade. • Survival list: You must learn frequently used expressions in class and take quizzes based on the survival list. • Midterm & final exams: You must take these exams in order to pass this course. ***Important: In order to pass this course, students must also complete : • TOEIC e-learning: Students must finish the assigned number of lessons and get at least 65% correct at each quiz. • Vocabulary quizzes: Take assigned vocabulary quizzes online and achieve the required score. |

By the end of this course, students will be able to: • Read or listen to and understand classroom English and oral instructions (live or online) • Read and understand simple academic texts • Understand the structure of a paragraph, i.e. main idea and supporting details • Read and write short English email messages with acceptable grammar and construction (academic and non-academic) • Use spell checker properly • Write a sentence with acceptable grammar |

This course continues from the Introductory English 1 and Introductory English 2 courses taught in the first two quarters of the freshman year. Introductory English 3 aims to continue developing learners’ four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for general communication. In addition, the course aims to improve learners’ fluency with English; learners’ ability to engage in meaningful communicative interaction, and also further learners’ knowledge of the formal aspects of the English language, such as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. At the same time, learners will engage with a variety of content topics and themes, developing their ability to discuss issues and think critically. The course includes: •In-class activities- participating actively in class activities and tasks is an important part of the course. Your participation will be carefully monitored. It is also important for you to bring the course textbook to every class; not bringing the textbook will affect your class participation evaluation. If you have to miss a class for an important reason (such as illness, or a family emergency), you should contact your instructor in advance. •Vocabulary quizzes- there will be regular vocabulary quizzes throughout the course, based on words found in the course textbook. Your vocabulary quiz scores contribute to your overall final course grade. •Homework assignments- your instructor will sometimes assign homework to be done outside of class. These assignments are an important part of the course, and contribute to your overall final course grade. •Mid-term & final exams- exams will be administered twice for this course. Make-up exams will only be allowed for legitimate reasons (such as illness or a family emergency). ***Important: In order to pass this course, students must also complete: •TOEIC e-learning- students must successfully pass the quizzes of the assigned units. If a student fails to complete the TOEIC e-learning, they cannot pass the Introductory English 3 course. ***This course will be carried out face-to-face. Grades will be based on class participation, vocabulary quizzes, homework assignments, a speaking assignment, and the two examinations: • Active participation- 5% • Speaking assignment- 10% • In-class activities/ homework assignments- 20% • Mid-term exam- 25% • Final exam- 25% Vocabulary quizzes- 15% ***It is necessary to earn at least 40% in each category in order to pass the course.*** •Student obligations- It is the students’ responsibility to read the syllabus and weekly instructions; take the quizzes, speaking assignments and exams on time, and complete homework assignments in a timely manner. It is important to attend classes. If you are absent more than the maximum number allowed for this course, the final grade will be an “F,” regardless of your final score for the course. If you are late three times, that will count as one absence. If you are more than twenty minutes late, you will be regarded as being absent from that class. •Academic integrity- Students must take the quizzes and exams individually; cheating or plagiarizing other’s work will not be allowed. This course is designed to consolidate basic communication skills in English and further foster critical thinking skills, learning to summarize/generate ideas or construct/evaluate arguments in English independently and collaboratively. Activities will be balanced across the 4 skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), designed to improve both the receptive and productive skills in discussing course topics. Topics introduced in this course center around the contemporary issues, which students will find intriguing and essential in their career development. Also, there will be mandatory e-learning assignments in this course. Details will be provided in class. |

***Combination of face-to-face classes and remote classes (see schedule below) Course description IE3 is an English course focused on writing and technical presentation skills. This course teaches students to speak and write English at an intermediate to advanced level. Course focus is on preparing students for careers as computer scientists. The course will focus on critical thinking abilities in specific contexts of use. Further, the course will prepare students to make conference presentations, speak diligently, make presentations articulately and learn online content management and delivery at an acceptable level. |

Course objectives Students will learn writing and presentation strategies that allow them to communicate and think critically in English as computer science professionals. By the end of this course, students will achieve the following course tasks: T1. Verbally summarize what they read/heard T2. Listen to and understand an academic presentation T3. Develop thesis-writing strategies (focus on organization, layout, formatting, text-graphics coordination and content judgment) T4. Prepare and make a presentation without notes (no reading from slides or memos) T5. Find synonyms using a thesaurus, a dictionary, and online resources T6. Develop skills to design a technical presentation T7. Create a poster for an academic presentation Attainment targets Speaking Using English, students are expected to be able to: • Describe a process used in computer science • Make presentations to describe a process/procedure, technology or situation • Respond to questions from audience/instructor • Provide a reasoned opinion, with evidence, on a familiar topic Writing Using English, students are expected to be able to: • Write statements to describe a process, or main arguments on a topic • Design posters to describe a research theme • Design technical presentations demonstrating a technology and/or a CS topic of interest • Be able to write captions describing an image to be used in poster/presentation/report • Produce (in teams) a technical brochure advertising a technology Reading Using English, students are expected to be able to: • Research a topic well based on readings on the Internet • Select/highlight the most important arguments in a reading and write thesis statements • Comprehend a process, instruction or guidelines as outlined in a technical text • Look for synonyms/antonyms for word choices made for the presentation/reports Listening Using English, students are expected to be able to: • Follow oral instructions and lectures in the classroom reasonably well • Listen to the TED talks (without subtitles) and other pertinent YouTube videos • Listen to and understand classroom presentations by classmates and post follow-up online comments |

Class Session Assignment 1 Course Introduction; Using Grammarly software for text editing; Introductory Forum Assignment 2 Read online articles on computer science topics and summarize major ideas in writing; short video speaking assignments (with notes). 3 Read online articles on computer science topics and summarize major ideas in writing; short in-class speaking assignments (without notes). 4 Identify 5 keywords in each of the articles read in W1-S2 & W2-S1 and re-write the summary using synonyms; re-phrase the sentences in the summary for novice readers. 5 Watch TED talks videos (only available from instructor panel) on a given topic in class (with subtitles ON) – Summarize what you heard/read (note-taking) 6 Watch TED talks videos on a given academic topic (link posted in Schoology) – write short summaries. Identify key words in the videos and re-write summary with synonyms. 7 Identify a topic in CS that you would like to research and search for articles from Google Scholar – write a thesis statement and summarize ideas for the selected articles. Draw a mind map representing your ideas for the topic. 8 Select graphics online (Google images) in support of your research topic – write text captions to describe the image and how it relates to your research statement; use concept map to represent ideas graphically 9 Design a technical presentation for your research topic and submit the link in Schoology for peer review comments (must follow instructions on organization, layout, text-graphics coordination etc.) 10 Verbally summarize the main ideas in the research (and present in class) with minimal readings from memos/note cards; verbally summarize the main ideas in a graphic. 11 Use Screencast-o-Matic to prepare the technical presentation with voice and face embedded and post in YouTube for peer review 12 Preparation of voice support for the technical presentation using alternative phrases/synonyms (not allowed to read the slides as voice support) 13 Lecture on poster creation; create a poster on the research topic for possible academic presentation 14 Using VoiceTube for learning English; work on poster creation Week # 8: Final Project Poster presentation |

If you are absent for more than 5 or more class sessions, you will automatically fail the course, irrespective of whether you have submitted the course assignments. • Translation software (e.g., Google translate) should be used minimally and reasonably. • Materials should be written in your own words, and not copied directly from the Internet. • Any request for extension of the due date / missed exam should be communicated with the course instructor in advance. • Assignments should NOT be emailed to the instructor (unless on specific request), and must be posted in the LMS. |

***This year, classes will be conducted primarily online. The primary aim of this course is to enable participants to write a graduation thesis that conforms to the university guidelines and expectations of supervisors. The form, function and content of the graduation thesis and its sections will be studied in detail. Participants will plan, draft, edit and revise their own graduation thesis throughout this course. The secondary aim is to plan, prepare and practice for the graduation thesis presentation. |
