This course teaches students basic English skills necessary for communication, achieving academic goals, and personal development at the University of Aizu. Through a variety of topics and activities, students will develop four language skills (i.e., reading, writing, listening and speaking) with emphasis on receptive skills. ***Important: All English courses for first-year students are extremely important for your success at the University of Aizu. We strongly recommend you to take all of them (Introductory English 1-4) regardless of your TOEIC score. The course includes the following components: • In-class activities: Participating actively in class activities and tasks is an important part of the course. • Homework assignments: Your instructor will assign homework to be done outside of class. These assignments are an important part of the course, and contribute to your overall final course grade. • Survival list: You must learn frequently used expressions in class and take quizzes based on the survival list. • Midterm & final exams: You must take these exams in order to pass this course. ***Important: In order to pass this course, students must also complete : • TOEIC e-learning: Students must finish the assigned number of lessons and get at least 65% correct at each quiz. • Vocabulary quizzes: Take assigned vocabulary quizzes online and achieve the required score. |

By the end of this course, students will be able to: • Read or listen to and understand classroom English and oral instructions (live or online) • Read and understand simple academic texts • Understand the structure of a paragraph, i.e. main idea and supporting details • Read and write short English email messages with acceptable grammar and construction (academic and non-academic) • Use spell checker properly • Write a sentence with acceptable grammar |

This course continues from the Introductory English 1 and Introductory English 2 courses taught in the first two quarters of the freshman year. Introductory English 3 aims to continue developing learners’ four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for general communication. In addition, the course aims to improve learners’ fluency with English; learners’ ability to engage in meaningful communicative interaction, and also further learners’ knowledge of the formal aspects of the English language, such as vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. At the same time, learners will engage with a variety of content topics and themes, developing their ability to discuss issues and think critically. The course includes: •In-class activities- participating actively in class activities and tasks is an important part of the course. Your participation will be carefully monitored. It is also important for you to bring the course textbook to every class; not bringing the textbook will affect your class participation evaluation. If you have to miss a class for an important reason (such as illness, or a family emergency), you should contact your instructor in advance. •Vocabulary quizzes- there will be regular vocabulary quizzes throughout the course, based on words found in the course textbook. Your vocabulary quiz scores contribute to your overall final course grade. •Homework assignments- your instructor will sometimes assign homework to be done outside of class. These assignments are an important part of the course, and contribute to your overall final course grade. •Mid-term & final exams- exams will be administered twice for this course. Make-up exams will only be allowed for legitimate reasons (such as illness or a family emergency). ***Important: In order to pass this course, students must also complete: •TOEIC e-learning- students must successfully pass the quizzes of the assigned units. If a student fails to complete the TOEIC e-learning, they cannot pass the Introductory English 3 course. |

Grades will be based on class participation, vocabulary quizzes, homework assignments, a speaking assignment, and the two examinations: • Active participation- 5% • Speaking assignment- 10% • In-class activities/ homework assignments- 20% • Mid-term exam- 25% • Final exam- 25% Vocabulary quizzes- 15% ***It is necessary to earn at least 40% in each category in order to pass the course.*** •Student obligations- It is the students’ responsibility to read the syllabus and weekly instructions; take the quizzes, speaking assignments and exams on time, and complete homework assignments in a timely manner. It is important to attend classes. If you are absent more than the maximum number allowed for this course, the final grade will be an “F,” regardless of your final score for the course. If you are late three times, that will count as one absence. If you are more than twenty minutes late, you will be regarded as being absent from that class. •Academic integrity- Students must take the quizzes and exams individually; cheating or plagiarizing other’s work will not be allowed. This course is designed to consolidate basic communication skills in English and further foster critical thinking skills, learning to summarize/generate ideas or construct/evaluate arguments in English independently and collaboratively. Activities will be balanced across the 4 skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), designed to improve both the receptive and productive skills in discussing course topics. Topics introduced in this course center around the contemporary issues, which students will find intriguing and essential in their career development. Also, there will be mandatory e-learning assignments in this course. Details will be provided in class. |

This course is designed to teach students how to organize and present their ideas effectively in English so that they can further develop their skills required in academic English. With the topics encompassing broad areas of study, students will learn how to summarize English materials (both verbally and also in writing) and express their ideas clearly in English (both in the form of structured texts and oral presentation). Intermediate English 3 is an English course focused on writing and technical presentation skills. In order to prepare students for careers as computer scientists, the course teaches the use of academic language and critical thinking in computer science (CS)-specific contexts. Further, the course will prepare students to make conference presentations and discuss their research interests. |

Course objectives Students will learn writing and presentation strategies that allow them to communicate and think critically in English as computer science professionals. By the end of this course, students will achieve the following course tasks: T1. Listen to, understand, and verbally summarize an academic presentation T2. Develop thesis-writing strategies (focus on organization, layout, formatting, text-graphics coordination and content judgment) T3. Design a technical presentation, find synonyms, and present research without notes T4. Create a poster for an academic presentation Attainment targets: Listening Using English, students are expected to be able to: L1. Follow oral instructions and lectures in the classroom reasonably well L2. Listen to speakers in video presentations and understand the content reasonably well L3. Listen to and understand classroom presentations by classmates and post follow-up online comments Speaking Using English, students are expected to be able to: S1. For each class session, T=Tasks described in Course Objectives above; L/S/R/W=Attainment Targets in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing as described above. 1 Learn about the course and the syllabus, the structure and functions of research papers, and how to identify basic information in them. [L1; S3] 2 Learn important features of academic style as well as key academic vocabulary and how it is used in the genres of research articles and presentations. Begin choosing a lab and research topic of interest. [L1; S3] 3 Learn about different methods of note taking and concept mapping. Watch a video on a CS topic and practice listening and taking notes. [T1; L1/2; S3] 4 Learn about summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting, and practice using academic vocabulary to summarize the video you saw. Work on the Video Speaking Assignment. The primary aim of this course is to enable participants to write a graduation thesis that conforms to the university guidelines and expectations of supervisors. The form, function and content of the graduation thesis and its sections will be studied in detail. Participants will plan, draft, edit and revise their own graduation thesis throughout this course. The secondary aim is to plan, prepare and practice for the graduation thesis presentation. |
