| 授業の概要 ／Course outline |
This course aims to develop learners’ four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for both general communication and for computer science-related topics. In addition, the course aims to improve learners’ fluency with English; learners’ ability to engage in meaningful communicative interaction, and also further learners’ knowledge of useful and important vocabulary. At the same time, learners will engage with a variety of content topics and themes related to their real life needs and computer science, developing their ability to discuss issues and think critically. Course components: The course includes: • In-class activities/homework- Your instructor will sometimes give activities or tasks in class, or sometimes assign homework tasks. These tasks will be graded, and will contribute to your overall final grade. There will also be final larger tasks at the end of every course unit. • Vocabulary quizzes- there will be regular vocabulary quizzes throughout the course, based high frequency words in the English language. Your vocabulary quiz scores contribute to your overall final course grade. You can take each quiz only once. 1. You will take each quiz online. 2. Study the assigned words before you take the quiz. 3. There is a 10-minute time limit. 4. Vocabulary quizzes account for 15% of your final grade. • Final exam- a final exam will be administered for this course. Make-up exams will only be allowed for legitimate reasons (such as illness or a family emergency). • Speaking assignment- you will be required to complete an assignment in which you will need to speak English. Your score will contribute towards your overall final grade. ***Important*** In order to pass this course, students must also complete: • TOEIC e-learning (Kickoff for TOEIC)- students must take: o at least 3 mock exams (1 in Q1; 1 in Q2 and 1 in Q3) o pass 51 units or more in total (17 units in Q1; 17 units in Q2 and 17 units in Q3). To pass a unit, you must score 65% or higher (re-takers who did not take IE1 or IE2 must complete 17 units by the due date) ***Important: You must complete the TOEIC e-learning in order to pass Introductory 1. |

This course continues from the Introductory English 1 and Introductory English 2 courses taught in the first two quarters of the freshman year. Bridge 1 to Intermediate English aims to continue developing learners’ four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking for both general communication and for computer science-related topics. In addition, the course aims to improve learners’ fluency with English; learners’ ability to engage in meaningful communicative interaction, and also further learners’ knowledge of useful and important vocabulary. This course is designed to consolidate basic communication skills in English and further foster critical thinking skills, learning to summarize/generate ideas or construct/evaluate arguments in English independently and collaboratively. Activities will be balanced across the 4 skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), designed to improve both the receptive and productive skills in discussing course topics. Topics introduced in this course center around the contemporary issues, which students will find intriguing and essential in their career development. This course is designed to teach students how to organize and present their ideas effectively in English so that they can further develop their skills required in academic English. With the topics encompassing broad areas of study, students will learn how to summarize English materials (both verbally and also in writing) and express their ideas clearly in English (both in the form of structured texts and oral presentation). Advanced English is an English course focused on writing and technical presentation skills. In order to prepare students for careers as computer scientists, the course teaches the use of academic language and critical thinking in computer science (CS)-specific contexts. Further, the course will prepare students to make conference presentations and discuss their research interests. |

Course objectives Students will learn writing and presentation strategies that allow them to communicate and think critically in English as computer science professionals. By the end of this course, students will achieve the following course tasks: T1. Listen to, understand, and verbally summarize an academic presentation T2. Develop thesis-writing strategies (focus on organization, layout, formatting, text-graphics coordination and content judgment) T3. Design a technical presentation, find synonyms, and present research without notes T4. Create a poster for an academic presentation Attainment targets: Listening Using English, students are expected to be able to: L1. Follow oral instructions and lectures in the classroom reasonably well L2. Listen to speakers in video presentations and understand the content reasonably well L3. Listen to and understand classroom presentations by classmates and post follow-up online comments Speaking Using English, students are expected to be able to: S1. Describe a process used in computer science S2. Make presentations to describe a process/procedure, technology or situation S3. Respond to questions from audience/instructor S4. Provide a reasoned opinion, with evidence, on a familiar topic Reading Using English, students are expected to be able to: R1. Research a topic well based on readings on the Internet R2. Select/highlight the most important arguments in a reading and write thesis statements R3. Comprehend a process, instruction or guidelines as outlined in a technical text R4. Look for synonyms/antonyms for word choices made for the presentation/reports Writing Using English, students are expected to be able to: W1. Write statements to describe a process, or main arguments on a topic W2. Design posters to describe a research theme W3. Design technical presentations demonstrating a technology and/or a CS topic of interest W4. Be able to write captions describing an image to be used in poster/presentation/report |

Learn about the course and the syllabus, the structure and functions of research papers, and how to identify basic information in them. [L1; S3] 2. Learn important features of academic style as well as key academic vocabulary and how it is used in the genres of research articles and presentations. Begin choosing a lab and research topic of interest. [L1; S3] 3. Learn about different methods of note taking and concept mapping. Watch a video on a CS topic and practice listening and taking notes. [T1; L1/2; S3] 4. Learn about summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting, and practice using academic vocabulary to summarize the video you saw. Work on the Video Speaking Assignment. [T1; L1/2; S1/3; R1; W1] 5. Learn how to find useful topic information online. Begin searching for information related to your topics of interest. Practice discussing these topics with partners. [L1/3; S1/2/3; R1/3] 6. Practice summarizing information from academic texts using example sentences and academic vocabulary. Work on the Summary Assignment. [T2; L1; S3; R1/2/4; W1] 7. Learn how specific words can express opinions or measurable facts, and how to identify these words in texts. Practice evaluating evidence for statements in academic texts and discuss this evidence with partners. [L1/3; S1/2/3/4; R1/2/3; W1] 8. Using graduation theses from a lab you want to join, learn the language used to describe research processes, methods, and/or results in your field. Learn how to plan a good research presentation and make effective presentation slides. Choose a CS topic of interest and begin work on the Technical Presentation Assignment. The primary aim of this course is to enable participants to write a graduation thesis that conforms to the university guidelines and expectations of supervisors. The form, function and content of the graduation thesis and its sections will be studied in detail. Participants will plan, draft, edit and revise their own graduation thesis throughout this course. The secondary aim is to plan, prepare and practice for the graduation thesis presentation. |
