This course is designed to provide students with skills and trainings for 1) improving the English speaking fluency and 2) preparing/giving English presentations. By practicing English as an International Language, students will be motivated to speak English more confidently and comfortably. This can further boost their confidence in public speaking (presentation). |

This course is designed for advanced students at the University of Aizu who expect to write in their future employment. We will learn basic business and professional writing and presentation in this course. The course purpose is also partly to increase awareness of students at UoA about INDUSTRY 4.0-5.0. The corporate knowledge about the inner functioning of some of the major established or start-up companies focused on automation and industry 4.0-5.0 is important as students get ready to start working after their graduation. Such knowledge would also help them prepare for job interviews. Every student will start the course by deciding on a type of company and industry where they would like to work in the future. |

Course Plan: A major purpose of the course is designed to help you write more effectively in work situations and understand the following: A. INDUSTRY 4.0-5.0 business types and how the industry is changing towards extensive automation B. Companies in different domains of industry 4.0- 5.0 that are launching new-generation products in the market. Course Objectives: 1. Understand the value of new industrial and technological changes coming with INDUSTRY 5.0 2. The student should be able to write in and about many corporate contexts. 3. Develop and understand various strategies for planning, researching, drafting, revising, and editing documents that respond effectively and ethically to professional situations. 4. Learn and apply strategies for effective group collaboration. (?) 5. Understand and use various research methods to produce professional documents. 6. Develop strategies for using and adapting various communication technologies for projects. 7. Learn to argue with visual data, understanding, and implementing principles of document design. Student Learning Objectives: Documentation Outcomes: 1. The ability to prepare short business documents in English. 2. Being able to write and design in any instructional context. 3. Specifically, learning to design brochures, manuals, business reports, and proposals. 3. Developing and understanding various strategies for planning, researching, drafting, revising, and editing documents that respond effectively and ethically to instructional situations. Communication Outcomes: 4. The ability to communicate and collaborate with real clients and industry professionals on multiple issues of technical documentation. 5. Learning and applying strategies for effective group collaboration and project management. 6. Developing strategies to use and adapt various communication technologies. Assignment Expectations Work must be appropriate to audience, purpose, and context. NOTE: Some of the selected teams or individuals in class may be selected for a conference presentation in July based on the course assignment. Students are required to take the TOEIC test in class during the final exam week to pass this course. This TOEIC requirement has been included to motivate students towards continuous improvement in English proficiency which is a strong indicator for success in professional environments. |

In this course, learners' awareness of cultural differences and the ways in which these differences are realized in communication will be raised. Learners will practice and develop all four language skills (reading, writing, listening & speaking), and will build their vocabulary. Materials for the course will be provided by the instructor, via Moodle. |

The main objective of this course is to give an overview of the major approaches and methods used in second and foreign language teaching. Many people who study a second language are not aware of the method behind the course design they are following. In this course, students will look at the key methods that influence today’s language material development. These methods will be discussed from the perspective of approach, design, and procedure. There will be a reading and a quiz for homework each class and a final project in which students will compare several methods discussed in class. This course should be of interest to those studying a second language, wishing to teach, or interested in creating language learning apps in the future. *Students are required to take the TOEIC test in class during the final exam week to pass this course. |

Visualization and data storytelling is absolutely essential in today’s business. If raw data can’t be turned into compelling information, companies will be unable to devise a strategy towards better corporate performance. The MIT Sloan School of Management described data storytelling as "the ability to convey data not just in numbers or charts but as a narrative that humans can comprehend." Sloan also said, "As with any good story, a data tale needs a beginning, a middle, an end, and some actionable insights. Data scientists aren't always up to the job". Reference: https://www.techrepublic.com/article/why-data-storytelling-in-business-matters-more-than-ever/ In this course we will discuss how data storytelling is a methodology for communicating information, tailored to a specific audience, with a compelling narrative. Data storytelling ideally merges three key fields of expertise: Data science: This field of expertise is the interdisciplinary field of sciences, which extracts knowledge and insight from data, making it readily available. Visualizations: Transforming data into graphs, pie, and line charts meant we could see our data like never before, however, data visualizations alone have limitations. They provided at-a-glance snapshots of data, lacking the context needed to explain why something has happened. Storytelling: Data scientists are often skilled at collecting and delivering data, but lack the skills to relay a true understanding of the opportunities hidden in the data delivered. As part of this course, we will focus on understanding how data science is now one of the most demanding areas of study in computer science, what it takes to become a good data scientist, the power of data visualization, and how to deliver compelling data storytelling for efficient project management, and how it could be converted into actionable strategies for companies. |
