Conclusion of a Contract for a "Center of Excellence (COE)" with Sun Microsystems, Inc.

On Thursday, June 28, 2007, The University of Aizu and Sun Microsystems, Inc. concluded a contract for a "Center of Excellence (COE)", a program demonstrating partnership between Sun, educational institutions, and third parties.
By the conclusion of the contract, the University, with the cooperation of Sun, will consider various regional and educational support programs to promote IT education in local areas and also use of IT in educational research insititutions.
The University and Sun will not only strengthen the partnership to contribute to promotion of IT education in Fukushima Prefecture and a use of IT in educational research institutions, but also will aim to foster future UNIX engineers, further develop the IT industry, and create business opportunities through these educational activities.

Background of the conclusion of Sun COE
  1. Various progressive approaches to use of IT in educational research institutions.
  2. Leading IT educations in the Aizu area and proactive efforts in IT education and use of IT in the field of education over the entire region.
  3. Taking an important role as an insitution in producing excellent UNIX engineers in society.
  4. Adoption of a UNIX-like system in the campus environment and proactive use of Open Software including Open Solaris.

After the signing ceremony, a commemorative lecture titled "OPEN POSSIBILITIES : Vision and Strategy of Sun" was given by Mr. Akihito Fujii, Chief Director of Community Projects, Sun Microsystems K.K.

On Friday, June 29, and on Saturday, June 30, " The Install Festa" was held to provide seminars on Solaris/OpenSolaris, and JAVA, and participants were given an opportunity to experience installation of OpenSolaris on PCs firsthand.
