Signing of Memorandums Regarding Graduate-Level International Dual Degree Programs with Novosibirsk State Technical University and Novosibirsk State University
Professor Nikolay N. Mirenkov, Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School of The University of Aizu,
visited Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) and Novosibirsk State University (NSU), in Russia.
The University of Aizu has been an international parter on a university-level with each of these universities since October of last year.
This visit was reached an agreement regarding a graduate-level international dual degree program to be implemented within the framework
of previous agreements between the universities. A memorandum including items necessary for consideration before the start of the program
in Autumn, 2008 was drafted and signed with NSTU on Tuesday, August 28, and with NSU on Friday, September 7.
The aim of this program is not only to provide PhD and Master level students of The University of Aizu and its partner universities
with use of the educational and research environments of both of the relevant universities to obtain degrees concurrently from each
of these universities, but also to foster international human resources.

Novosibirsk State Technical University
Located in a city in central Western Siberia. The university was founded by the Soviet government in 1950 and was known as Novosibirsk
Institute of Electrical Engineering. It was renamed as Novosibirsk State Technical University in 1992. Currently, a broad range of
educational and academic research is conducted in NSTU's 75 departments and 56 research institutions. NSTU has been known as an institute for
higher eduation for training of specialists and professionals upon requests from society. Over 75,000 students have completed undergraduate
and graduate programs since its foundation. NSTU has taken an important role in technical training including distance education for lifelong
learning in Siberia and has also recently focused on Japanese language education.
Novosibirsk State University
Located in the suburbs of Novosibirsk, a central city in Western Siberia. Established by members of the USSR Academy of Sciences as a research
institute with 6 departments in the field of natural sciences using the vast natural resorces in Siberia. Through reorganization in the 1960s,
the institute became a comprehensive university, which currently consists of 13 departments. During the past 40 years since its foundation, about 28,000 people
have been trained at NSU, and graduates of NSU has worked in academic and industrial institutions all over the world such as Stanford Univesity
and Hewlett-Packard. NSU is affiliated with the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Science (*), and about half of the staff and young
researchers at the Academy are graduates of NSU. A Japanese language program was established in 1970. With one of the best Japanese courses
in Siberia with 35 years of tradition, NSU has produced many researchers in East Asian studies, Japanese language teachers, translators and
interpreters.
