The Second Aizu International Student Forum-Contest on Multimedia

The AIScontest'99 was held within the framework the Sixth International Conference on Distributed Multimedia Systems (DMS'99) and attracted students from Hungary, Japan, Italy, Taiwan, Turkey, Russia, Malaysia and USA.

Within the framework of the paper and home-task contests 16 projects were presented: nine projects from abroad (Italy, Hungary, Malaysia, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey, and USA) and seven from the University of Aizu. In addition, 15 students took part in the on-site task contest: four students from foreign countries (Hungary and Taiwan), two from the Nihon University, and nine students from the University of Aizu. Total number of the project developers involved and remote participants exceeded 45 persons.

The team of referees consisted of Professors A. Belyaev, Z. Cheng, J. Ma, L.Nagamatsu, K. Naik, N. Mirenkov, A.Pasko, T. K. Shih, and A. Vazhenin evaluated works related to all competitions. In addition, papers of the first competition were reviewed internationally as regular papers for DMS'99.

In the paper & home task contest, the first prize was awarded to Anatoli Osipov, Moscow State Engineering Physics Institute, Russia, for his project ``Modeling and Rendering Multidimensional Shapes for Multimedia Applications''. The second prize, five third prizes and special prize were given to those participants from Taiwan, Hungary and Japan. The special prize for originality was awarded to Masayuki Hisada, University of Aizu, for his work ``Kendo motion Analysis and Simulation.''

In addition, all participants have received special certificates. Like in 1998, the students of the University of Aizu showed a very good performance.

It is our great pleasure to mention here that all prizes were of cash type and donated by Wakamatsu Gas Group.
