The University of Aizu Graduate School's doctoral program was established in April this year with the existing the masters' course as its initial stage and the doctoral course as a continuation of this. The program aims to respond to the needs of society as it becomes more highly information-oriented, to nurture researchers and educators in the field of computer science and engineering, and to make contributions to the local community.
The doctoral program will be similar in structure to the masters' program: 8 fields in 2 departments. A maximum of 5 students will be enrolled in each field, making a total of 10 students (total capacity of 30 students). 12 students will be enrolled AY1999, the program's first year (11 in the spring and 1 scheduled for enrollment in the fall). A meeting for the Prefectural Governor and the newly enrolled students was held after the entrance ceremony in April. Establishment of the doctoral program has been welcomed, and people have great expectations of it.
