New Year Message from President

Shoichi Noguchi, University President

I would like to say a word of greeting on the occasion of the beginning of the first term of academic year 1999.

The 21st century will most certainly develop as a highly information-oriented society. Japan must further develop important computer and network technologies capable of responding to a highly information-oriented society in order to secure a leading position in the 21st century again.

Looking from this perspective, this university, which focuses on leading edge research and development in the field of computers and networks, has an extremely important mission.

What should this university do to accomplish this mission in the future? We have two objectives for our future.

The first is to enrich the Graduate School's doctoral program, which was established this April, and build up a graduate school renown internationally for its research in the field of computers and networks.

The second is for the Core and Information Technology Center, also established this April, to firmly carry out research and development of next generation ultra high-speed networks in the limited time period of five years.

It is my firm belief that this Center can be developed as the largest of its kind in Japan.

Finally, development of this university can only be achieved by strong solidarity among its faculty and students. I respectfully ask you all for your cooperation.
