Introduction to the Coming-of-Age Ceremonies

Seijin no Hi (Adult's Day) is a national holiday observed on the second Monday of January to honour those who turn 20 in the period April 2 of the previous year to April 1. In accordance with the Japanese Civil Code, adulthood is reached at 20 and the rights to vote, drink, and smoke are bestowed.

Seijin Shiki (Coming-of-Age Ceremonies) are held this day by City Halls and each ceremony reflecting the local character. Young people get dressed up in kimono and suits for the ceremony in locations and receive congratulations from the Mayor. It is a colourful and exciting mid-winter day for the new adults.
