The University of Aizu University-Business Innovation Center
Since its establishment in April 1995, the University of Aizu Multimedia Center has functioned mainly as a multimedia base. We plan to allocate full-time faculty members and an administrative office to the center in order to reinforce its functions as a base for university-industry cooperation, and to reopen the center on April 1, 2002 as the University of Aizu University-Business Innovation Center (UBIC). The center will coordinate university-industry collaboration by gathering and disseminating a wide range of information for joint research and business start-ups and providing comprehensive services related to university-industry cooperation for regional communities and businesses.

JABEE mock-examination

The University of Aizu underwent a mock-examination by the Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (JABEE), which was carried out to examine the validity of JABEE's examination standards and methodologies. On January 15 and 16, JABEE conducted an on-site examination in the same manner as in a real examination. Although the institute pointed out some areas for improvement, it said that the University could receive three-year certification in a real examination

The University of Aizu University-Industry Cooperation Forum held
On January 28, the University of Aizu University-Industry Cooperation Forum was held, using a gigabit network to link the University's Multimedia Center, the main forum location, and Fukushima Prefecture High-Tech Plaza in Koriyama City. With the theme "Towards Formation of Intellectual Clusters: Assistance for Reinvigoration of Small- and Medium-Size Firms through 'Knowledge,'" the forum's objective was to widely disseminate the University's research to small- and medium-size firms in an effort to establish a foothold for realistic university-industry collaboration. At Aizu and Koriyama, a total of 180 people participated, and there was a lively and meaningful exchange of questions and answers. At an informal gathering, participants from companies and from the University faculty actively exchanged information.

The University of Aizu entrance examinations
Examinations for students applying in the admission system based on recommendations were held on December 1 (Sat.), 2001. The admission quota was 48 students; there were 88 examinees (an acceptance ratio of 1 to 1.8). The number of total examinees and female examinees was the largest ever.
The exams in the first and second sessions will be held on February 25, and March 12, 2002, respectively. Compared with the previous year, the number of applicants declined in the first and second sessions by 76 and 28, respectively, the lowest number of applicants ever. In particular, the decline in the number of applicants at the Tokyo test center in the first session was significant (a decline of 104 applicants).
