Audio Windows: Spatialization of Synthesized Speech, Spatialization of Music, Hierarchical Organization of Spatial Sound Sources

Michael Cohen,
Assistant Professor, Human Interface Laboratory

A groupware interface called audio windowing is being developed for configuring virtual acoustic space. MAW (acronymic for multidimensional audio windows) uses a NextStep-based graphical display to represent the status of each sound source or sink, including location, direction, articulation level/directivity, and hearing sensitivity in a virtual environment. Users feel as though they are sharing a common acoustic environment by manipulating localization and distance effects.
