Virtual Reality

Tosiyasu L. Kunii,
Professor, Computer Science and Engineering Laboratory

The Virtual Reality project is focused on the following topics:

(1) Modeling of Curves and Surfaces

The goal of this research is to visualize complex data sets, natural phenomena, and synthetic models which usually require complex and highly mathematical models, to provoke insights of them and to confirm the integrity of observations.

(2) Real-time Realistic Image Synthesis

The goal is speed up image display for complex environments through application of texture mapping and hierarchical data structures, control of level-of-detail.

(3) Spatial Sound

Goals are to integrate a spatial sound module with a virtual reality environment. Further a library of sound objects and sound textures is planned. For this a specifiction language has to be defined.

(4) User Interface

Various interaction methods based VR technology are investigated for a dental care system which simulates the jaw articulation for the design of tooth restorations.
