As represented by the Japan Gigabit Network (JGN), a national project for research and development of advanced information network technologies, research on high-speed networking are actively promoted worldwide. In response to these developments, Core and Information Technology Center (CITEC) was founded at the University of Aizu in April l999. At the center headed by Dr. T. Ikegami, intensive research and development are conducted for a five year period, focusing on the basic and applied technologies of the next-generation super high-speed networks. In particular, as one of the connection sites of theJGNnational project, the University of Aizu is working with various research institutions connected to JGN on research and development of basic and applied network technologies including applications for distance education, medical and nursing care, and e-commerce for the realization of the advanced information and communication society.

The Utsukushima Future Expo was held in Sukagawa city in 2001. CITEC contributed to the Expo by constructing a steroscopic HDTVcommunication system based on a 135Mbps ATM leased line between the Multi-Media Center of the University of AizuandtheFuture IndustryPavilion at theExpo ground. The communication system was used to transmit interactive high-resolution 3D graphics in real time to the Gigabit Theater at the Future Industry pavilion.

Proceedings of the WSES/IEEE Multiconference on Modern Information Technologies and Robotics, Malta, September 1 - 6, 2001., pages 285-288. WSES Press, 2001.
This paper offers an improvedmodel of the OASIS system, which is a distributed domain specific search system in the Internet. Themain thrust of our approach is to connect OASIS servers with a high-speed network based on ATM technology. This high-speed network allows communication between servers. Here we present methods of connecting OASIS servers with the ATM network. Obtained results indicate low response time of the OASIS system for the end user. Our simple approach requires only a minimum amount of hardware to be implemented.

Proceedings of the Second WSEAS Multiconference on Applied and Theoretical Mathematics, Cairns, Australia, December 17-23, 2001., pages 293-298. WSEAS Press, 2001.
This paper offers a new method of source selection in a distributed search environment. An integrated collection description on the base of most important single terms and word collocations makes possible efficient selection of a potentially useful collection for any given user query. Experimental results indicate good retrieval accuracy in the case of search for scientific documents.
