The shape modeling laboratory was successful to earn several large-scale research funds from national and domestic governments. The following research projects have been started in the lab since AY 2002:

"University venture": Mobile phone network for health management, funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

"Industry cluster": Prediction Technology of Alzheimer's dementia and the Supporting WEB system for aged population, funded by Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

"Mini-cluster project": Haptic Technology cooperated by Nihon University, funded by MEXT.

"Knowledge cluster (1)": A mobile internet system for homecare service support, funded by Fukushima Prefecture.

"Knowledge cluster (2)": A Virtual Medical Environment, funded by Fukushima Prefecture.

Supported by the research funds, especially by the "indirectly budget" of the university venture project of MEXT, the laboratory was rearranged and equipped in the AY 2002 to involve more researchers and students. During the end of AY 2002, the lab hadmore 30members including professors, researchers, post doctors, students of doctorial andMaster programs , and graduation thesis studies, and foreign students. To manage and supervising these research projects, Professor Wei was working in various fields including Biomedical modeling and computer simulation, Geometric modeling and visualization, Telemedicine and E-health, Biomedical informatics and signal processing.

Prof. Alexander Belyaev's research was focused on developing new methods for faithful and robust surface reconstruction from scattered data. Modern 3D digitizing techniques can yield millions of 3D points scattered over boundaries of digitized objects. Once these points have been collected, it is a non-trivial task to builda surface representation deliveringan accurate approximationof the collected data. The developed methods are based onmultiscale approximations of scattered data by implicit functions. The methods exploit the power of local piece-wise polynomial approximations glued together by a partition of unity and radial basis functions in order to achieve fast and high quality approximations of scattered data.

Prof. Wenxi Chen's research was focused on the following aspects:

  1. A ubiquitous platform for multiple vital signs collection, management and application
  2. Mobile phone applications in health care and social security
  3. Independent component analysis application in biomedical engineering
  4. Biomedical instrumentation and digital signal processing

Unsharp masking is a well-known image sharpening technique. Given an image and its smoothed version, amplifying high frequencies of the image via unsharp masking is achieved by linear extrapolation of the input images. In this paper, we adapt the unsharp masking technique for 3D sharp deblurring purposes. Consider a blurred shape represented by a triangle mesh. Usually suchashape results from a 3D data corrupted by noise and then over smoothed. First we apply unsharp masking to the mash normals. To smooth the field of mesh normals we use several local averaging iterations applied to the mesh normals (iterative mean filtering). Then we apply linear extrapolation of the original and smoothed fields of normals. Finally we reconstruct the deblurred mesh by integrating the field of extrapolated normals. We also give a quantitative evaluation of the proposed unsharp masking technique. To perform the evaluation, we use L error metrics on mesh vertices and normals. Experimental results show that the unsharp masking technique is effective for sharp deblurring.

A mobile phone-based internet system for health monitoring and management is proposed. This system comprises an Internet server for automatic hearth information processing and thousands of wearable compound devices for monitoring physiological signals. Awearable compound device (dubbed an 'i-monitor') consists of a tiny attachable pad ('i-pad') and an i-mode cellular phone ('i-phone'). Multiple physiological signals are acquired by the i-pad, which is attached to the breast surface beneath the clothes of the user. Preliminary diagnosis is performed within the i-pad. Whenever abnormality is detected, the i-pad initiates a connection with the i-phone, transmitting data to the i-phone using the Bluetooth protocol. The i-phone relays this data to an i- health server throughtheDocomoDoPa wireless network using theTCP/IP protocol. The i-health server performs comprehensive analysis of the received data using various data mining methods, and then returns the diagnostic outcome as well as healthcare instructions back to the user.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the performance of an electrocardiogram (ECG) telemonitor using mobile internet connections for telemedicine. The UDP/IP protocol was used for data transmission. The packet loss and packet reversal were observed and analyzed. Algorithms for error correction are also introduced. This experiment shows that the data loss and reversal are relative to the packet size. Larger packet size causes more packet loss and less packet reversal, and vise visa. It is concluded that a packet size of 100 bytes is an appropriate choice that realize about 3viewing delay. This is an acceptable performance for practical use in telemedicine and telehealthcare.

In this paper, we propose a new technique for enhancing 3-D shapes approximated by triangle meshes: high-boost mesh filtering. Concepts based on the high-boost filter in signal and image processing are used for the development of the mesh filtering. An algorithm of the high-boost mesh filtering consists of affecting the high-boost filter to face normals on a triangle mesh and updating mesh vertex positions to adapt the mesh to the filtered normals. An enhancement operation is achieved by a procedure which substract smoothed face normals from the original ones. To apply the high-boost to filter to face normals on a triangle mesh, we require a low-pass filter for smoothing them. We use mean filtering applied to face normals in numerical experiments. The results indicate that the high-boostmeanmesh filtering is a technique effective for 3-D shape enhancement.

A method of recording the fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) and fetal heart rate (HR) is described. An abdominal lead and a thoracic lead were used to measurethe fetalECGand maternalECG,respectively. The maternal component in the abdominal lead measurement was estimated by a digital adaptive filter using the thoracic lead measurement as a reference. By suppressing the estimated maternal components in the abdominal lead, the fetal ECG could be detected. The beat-by-beat fetal QRScomplexes peaks were determined by a digital matched filter from fetal ECGenhanced in this way. Themethodwas trialed in 10 Holstein pregnant cows at gestation periods ranging from 136 to 224 days. The results show that this method was effective in extracting the fetal ECG and in determining the fetal HR from the raw noisy measurement data. The results suggest that the method would have applicability in monitoring fetal ECGas well as providing, non-invasively, a continuousHR profile du! ring gestation, which will enable better understanding of the development of cattle fetuses before delivery.

We previously proposed a lead method for monitoring the 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) with four standard leads. We also reported the implementation of deriving 12-lead ECG using lead vectors based on the Frank image surface. In this paper, we present an alternative approach that derives the 12-lead ECG using information redundancy in the 12-lead system. Performances of the two approaches are compared. Correlation coefficient between the original and derived waveforms is used as a measure of similarity. The potential difference in the middle ST segment between the original and derived wave forms is measured with an automatic ECGinterpretation program for a quantitative evaluation. The results showed that our new approach significantly improved the accuracy of derived ECGs.

In this paper, the development of a telemonitor is presented, which is a part of a client/serversystem for the homecareservice. It is capable of monitoring 12lead electrocardiogram(ECG) as well as other vital signals through the mobile internet. A Bluetooth unit is used to emulate the serial cable to perform data acquisition wirelessly. A PHS card is used to transmit vital signals from the mobile PC to the server. The UDP/IP protocol is used for real time data monitoring. Four ECG signals of standard leads are recorded in the mobile PC and transmitted to the server. In the server, 12 - leadECGsare derived based on our original study. The telemonitor is featured with two important points: the realization with the mobile internet, and the 12-lead ECG monitoring using reduced number of leads.

Two kinds of mesh median filters have been proposed. The filtering framework consists of two phases: Filtering face normals on a triangle mesh, and updating mesh vertex positions to fit the mesh to the processed normals. The median filter has an effect of discontinuity preservation without any parameter. The weighted mesh median filter has a better effect of feature preservation than the median filter.

Aportable monitor for ambulatory healthcare using an i-mode cellular phone is proposed. This monitor consists of a tiny unit and a cellular phone with Java platform. The unit includes acommonmodule and a functional module. The common module provides a shared interface (analog to digital conversion, signal processing and datacommunication protocol conversion and etc.) for diversity of the biosignals. The functional module is replaceable and applicable to various pick-up sensors for di??erent vital signs. An i-mode digital cellular phone with Java supported Internet browser is connected to the commonmodule via thePDC connector. Whena client signs in the i-mode server first time using his/her cellular phone, i appli (Java program for an i-mode cellular phone) will be automatically downloaded into the phone and initiated. The common module identi??es which kind of signal is incoming from the functional module and then launch the corresponding software package to detect the signal. If any abnormality in the vital sign is recognized, data will be sent to a specific server via an i-mode cellular phone. An interactive communication link is then setup between a doctor and a client through the wireless network.

Recently, research to prevent lifestyle-related illnesses such as diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity| has attracted increased attention. How to monitor health status ubiquitously without interfering with daily activities is a critical hurdle to be cleared. A great diversity of intelligent systems has been devised during the past decade. Common shortcomings included complicated usage and inadequate real-time response. We are developing a cordless sensor combined with a Java-supported mobile phone for monitoring multiple vital signs fully automatically and with real-time interactive communicability.

Various healthcare systems had been devised during the past decade. However, most of them were professional-oriented usage and prohibitive cost. In this research, the system architecture for health monitoring and management ubiquitously is described. The purpose of this study is to collect multiple vital signs, analyze and manage health information automatically at low cost. This system comprises an Internet server (dubbed an i-server) for automatic health information processing and many wearable compound devices for monitoring physiological signals. Awearable compound device (i-monitor) consists of a tiny attachable pad(i-pad) and a Java-supported mobilephone (i-phone). Multiple physiological signals are acquired by the i-pad, which is attached to the breast surface beneath the clothes of a user without interfering with daily activities. Preliminary diagnosis is performed within the i-pad. Health status is evaluated as normal, warning and abnormal. At scheduled timings, or whenever abnormality is detected, the i-pad initiates a connection with the i-phone, transmitting data to the i-phone using the Bluetooth protocol. The i-phone relays these data to an i-server through the wireless telephony network using the TCP/IP protocol. The i-server performs comprehensive analysis of the received data using various data mining methods, and then returns the diagnostic outcome as well as healthcare instructions back to the user.

We present an approach to extract respiration signal and pulse signal that have been included in measured pulsatile signals of a pillow cuff installed on the occiput of user. In this article, we investigate a separation approach based on ICA (Independent Component Analysis). Since there are only two observations that are two linear mixtures of three sources, pulse, respiration and noise, a usual ICA only cannot separate them perfectly. To solve this problem, we proposed a two-step algorithm; the first step includes a standard ICA and the second step includes two pieces of filter processing. In the ICA step, we can remove the noise from the mixtures of pulse and respiration signal. The filter processing can further separate the pulse and respiration. We shall present our simulation and experimental results. The obtained results are compared with reference pulse and respiration that are measured simultaneously with pillow cuff measuring, which shows effectiveness of our approach.

The ambulatory ECG has been an important tool for diagnosis of arrhythmias. A recent trend is to use 12-lead ambulatory ECG for diagnosis of myocardial ischemia with ST abnormalities. To overcome the gap between the diagnosis methodology of the ambulatory ECG and the standard 12-lead ECG, a compromised strategy is conducted to convert the ambulatory ECG to the standard 12-lead ECG. Through evaluations, a satisfying result is obtained that the standard 12-lead ECG can be well approached by the seated 12-lead ECG. This preliminary study may play an important role onthe clinic diagnosis of the ambulatory ECG.
