The acoustic data remotely measured by handy type microphones are investigated for
monitoring and diagnosing the ball bearing type rotational machine integrity in nuclear
power plants. The present study proposes the new signal pre-processing method
which normalizes the fundamental oscillation period into the same length and timing
by using zero-crossing interval of filtered acoustic signal. The pre-processed signal
patterns are classified by kernel-based principal component analysis (KPCA) and
probabilistic neural network (PNN). It is shown that the monitoring index defined by
KPCA and PNN is useful to classify the known states and unknown states with high
sensitivity. |

Automatic Web Service Composition. In Joint Workshop on Frontier of Computer
Science and Technology (FCST),pp. 75–78, Nagasaki, Japan, December
2008. FCST 2008 Committee, IEEE CPS. |
Automatic Web Service Composition (AWSC) was proposed to compose new services.
Paik proposed logical and physical web service composition and ontologies for this. A
useful composer needs a web interface for general users. So a general user interface is
designed and implemented in this thesis. This user interface generates some HTML
form based on these ontology and additional HTN ontology. |

QoS Requirements, Preferences, and Logic Constraints for Automatic
Web Service Composition. In Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference

2008. ICWS Organizing Committee, IEEE CPS. |
The constraints revealed during a logical composition of services are often too abstract
for automatic service composition. The abstract constraints have to be transformed
to concrete attributes. This research investigates semi-automatic transformation of
intermediate constraints to concrete constraints for automatic service composition. It
considers simultaneously a stack of composition attributes for QoS, preferences, and
logic constraints. |

Using Latent Topics as Additional Features. In Proceedings of the 2008
International Computer Symposium (ICS 2008), Damsui, Taiwan, November
2008. ICS 2008 Committee. |
Abstract-In feature selection of text categorization, there are the methods which handle
word sense disambiguation by extracting synonymy and polysemy among words
in documents. One of the methods utilizes latent topics underlying the documents
by using a topic model. PLSA and LDA have been proposed as the representative
models. In this paper, two features which include both TF-IDF and the latent topic
values which automatically extracted from topic models were utilized for text categorization
using AdaBoost. Then, the performances were compared with the ones of
only TF-IDF features. As a result, this study confirmed effectiveness and weakness of
the augmented features. |

Most students think of software engineering in terms of its products rather than
its art. Yet, the development of software systems is a design problem, and when
interdependent units are coherent and interfaces between them are simple and well
defined it becomes easier to acquire and apply the knowledge, and resolve conflicting
ideas, interests, and needs. Student learning should benefit from strong action-reaction
relationships and feedback loops in a team oriented environment. However, students
lack the experience and knowledge that professionals have and the process models
used by the industry may not necessarily be ideal for the university environment.
The question remains how to apply effectively these new models and technology in
education so that students get relevant experience accompanied with a better learning
outcome. |

The software engineering process consists of a complex set of activities that require
experience and participation at an individual, team, and organizational level. Both
academia and industry have been contributing to the improvements of processes and
technologies. However, differences between academia and industry raise multiple questions
that should be addressed before applying the software process in the university
environment. For example, what characteristics of professional projects help students
develop their technical skills, what project attributes facilitate the fulfilment of the
educational objectives, how should undergraduate students behave, collaborate, and
contribute to increase the likelihood of a successful project outcome, etc. This paper
presents insights into these questions, and reasoning. |
