Festival Highlights

Behind the merry Aizu festivals lies a melancholy note that stems form a realization that the main festivals of the year are coming to an end as the autumn wind begins to blow. Once the festivals are over, the people of Aizu are busy bringing in the harvest and preparing for winter.

Numerous festivals are held from the beginning of the year to spring while the area is buried in snow, and on into summer, after the rice planting has ended. The reason lies in the close relationship between the festivals and man's labor. Deeply engrained aspects of local life, such ac prayers for a bountiful harvest and commercial prosperity, live on quietly in the traditional festivals in the Aizu basin surrounded by mountains. In recent years, the appeal of the festivals as a tourist attraction has added a new element to this sort of recreation.
