Intermediate English 1 is a learner-centered course designed around the functional use of language and the communicative needs of University of Aizu (UoA) computer science students. Therefore, English is viewed principally as a tool for communication, and learning content and activities are chosen that best enable learners to effectively acquire and apply English language knowledge and skills in situations they encounter during their academic studies at UoA. This course is organized around a set of 5 key functions fundamental to academic communication and designed to teach a collection of vocabulary and language patterns learners need to perform these functions. At the same time, topics are included that provide learners in the field of computer science with a realistic and practical context for the language they are learning so that the authenticity, relevance, and utility of the language material to the learners’ needs are brought to the fore. Furthermore, the course aims to increase learner fluency in receptive (listening/reading) and productive (speaking/writing) language skills essential for meaningful communicative interaction through a balance of online and face-to-face activities. Finally, learners will be introduced to methods of language learning that will assist them with their life-long learning needs.
