授業の概要
/Course outline
Engaging digital applications though the English language, this course draws students’ attention to the commonalities and rich variation that exists among the cultures of the world. Computers will facilitate the examination of world music from the point of view of ethnomusicology. Students will be encouraged to apply critical thinking to historical, linguistic, sociological, geographic and purely musical processes. In this way, they will also hone their spoken, written and receptive English ability.
Beginning by examining the core concepts of this important musicological field, the course goes on to cover significant traditions within a broadly representative selection of locations throughout the world. The global focus is followed by a more local one with students turning their attention to the musical and cultural life in their own hometowns and current community. Students will engage in E-field work, an increasingly vital tool in research into the music of the world.
