Award-winning Students

-Mr. Xin Zhu, a student of the Doctoral Program, was awarded second prize in the Young Investigators Competition sponsored by IEEE EMBS Japan Chapter..

The paper submitted by Mr. Xin Zhu, a third year student in the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Computer Science and Engineering, entitled "Accurate Determination of Respiratory Rhythm and Pulse Rate Using an Under-Pillow Sensor Based on Wavelet Transformation," was highly evaluated and received second prize in the Young Investigators Competition sponsored by IEEE EMBS Japan Chapter (JpCOMPEEmbs05.) He is the first student to win a prize from the Tohoku district.

The objective of this competition is to foster young researchers in the field of medical engineering. Evaluation of submitted papers are made not only on the content of research, but comprehensively on compositions, charts and diagrams, and English expressions, including an evaluation of whether the research content is properly presented in the paper.

Mr. Xin Zhu has been conducting research on devices and algorithms for the measurement of respiratory rhythm and pulse rate using a pillow during sleep, which was presented in his paper, since April, 2004. It is expected that his research will contribute to early detection of diseases during sleep, such as sleep apnea syndrome and sudden death. "I would like to continue with this research, in order to achieve practical use of research results," he said.
