Mr. Mianxiong Dong and Mr. Yuichi Yaguchi Chosen to Become JSPS Research Fellows

Mr. Mianxiong Dong and Mr. Yuichi Yaguchi, both in their first year of the Doctoral Program of the Graduate School of Computer Science and Engineering, have been chosen to become a research fellows for FY 2009 under the fellowship program for young scientists offered by the Japan Sciety for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
For the purpose of fostering young researchers who will play an important role in future scientific research activities, JSPS selects highly-qualified young researchers as research fellows and provides a monthly stipend to help these researchers devote themselves to conducting research.
Mr. Dong, who is affiliated with the Performance Evaluation Laboratory, has been working on "Research on Theories and Key Technologies of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN)" under the instruction of Professor Minyi Guo. Mr. Yaguchi is affiliated with the Image Processing Laboratory, and his research advisor is Professor Ryuichi Oka. He has conducted research titled "A Study of Spotting Algorithm for Pattern Retrieval and Recognition." The two students were both pleased to receive their notifications on their acceptance as research fellows. Mr. Dong says that he will do his best to become a researcher like Professor Guo, and intends to contribute to the University in the future. Mr. Yaguchi also expressed his hopes, saying that "Humans can easily recognize what, where, and how objects are, but computers still have problems in these types of recognition. My goal is to solve problems related to this and to contribute to the University and the world as well." A monthly stipend will be granted to the two students for 2 years beginning from April of next year.
From the University of Aizu, Mr. Akira Sato and Mr. Yutaka Watanobe who currently joined our University as faculty members, had been selected to the program in 2006.
