The program for "JSPS Research Fellowships for Young Scientists" has been carried out since 1985 for the purpose of fostering young researchers.

It is extremely important to provide young excellent scientists with opportunities to concentrate on their research early in their careers, selecting research themes on their own based on liberal and creative ideas, in order to foster researchers with creativity who will play an indispensable role in the future in scientific research fields in Japan.
For this purpose, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), an independent administrative institution, offers a special program under which fellowships are granted to individuals having aspirations for concentrating on research with excellent research abilities chosen from graduate students who are enrolled in university doctoral programs and postdoctoral researchers who conduct research activities at universities or research institutions on a non-employment basis.
In view of the need to foster and recruit young researchers with research abilities at the world's highest standards, a research grant is also provided for outstanding postdoctoral researchers (as special postdoctoral fellows) following due selection.
