Start of a Regional Project at Fukushima Museum
As a new project for regional contribution, Japanese descriptions of displays in the General Exhibitions
of the Fukushima Museum into multiple languages, has started jointly by students from Intercultural Communication classes of
The University of Aizu and the Support Association for International Students of The University of Aizu (SAISUA).
Assistant Professor Jerold A. DeHart of the University submitted the proposal and the project aims at
not only providing digital files of translations for the convenience of tourists from other countries, but to also give an
opportunity to learn about Japanese culture for both Japanese and international students of the University. In the first
stage, third and fourth-year students taking Intercultural Communication class will translate Japanese displays and descriptions into English,
and multilingual translation will follow by international students as SAISUA activities.
On Friday, June 22, students taking the Intercultural Communication class visited the Museum and were placed in groups for each section. They were
taking notes and pictures during a lecture about the exhibitions to prepare for the translation work.
Here are some comments from students involved the projects: "It is my pleasure, as many tourists may get a better understanding of
Japan through our English translations.", "It brings me a sense of responsibility and achievement.", "Although it is not my
first time to visit the Museum, this opportunity has provided me a chance to see it from a different point of view."
