The leading industrial countries in the world understand that computer software has become a critical element of the global society influencing virtually every aspect of human life. They consider Software Engineering as the key technology of the 21st century. The Japanese government understood the significance of Software Engineering and in October 2004 established the Software Engineering Center as a structure of the Information-Technology Promotion Agency. The task of this center is to coordinate the efforts of industry, academia and government organizations to become the world's most advanced information technology nation. In response to the aforementioned request the Software Engineering Center was organized in our university in 2004. Its mission is towork in tight cooperation with universities, research institutions and prefecture industry to develop innovative software engineering research methods and processes and support the teaching process involving students in research. This year, we concentrated our efforts on developing Web search technologies applied to Japanese. New techniques were proposed and successfully tested. To support students taking part in programming competitions, in January - March 2004 we invited Mr. Stuchkin (he is a gold medal winner in the ACM Collegiate Programming Contest, 2001) from St. Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (Russia) to give lectures for our students and share his experience in participating in international programming contests. This visit was organized under the academic exchange agreement between our universities. |

There are several universities in Japan where the official language of teaching students is English. In this paper, we investigate our experiences and findings in teaching Japanese students of subjects related to computer science. We also demonstrate the importance of Web technologies assisting students in their study. |
