Research Development of ubiquitous platform We propose a situation-aware model to specify the situations of the users, define actions on the situations, so that when the situations really happen, defined actions will be triggered to provide services to the users. In order to realized the proposed model, we implement a ubiquitous platform called ubiquitous tiles system, by which users identifications and location can be acquired with corresponding relation between a user and his/her location, to detect the situations. Ubiquitous learning applications In this research, we focus on the importance of safety education, and develop a courseware (teaching material) for the safety education using ubiquitous technologies. This courseware system is designed for the elementary schoolchildren. It is used as the teaching material for the class of traffic safety, or for studying the appropriate actions against any accidents and crimes. The children can learn the safety education by playing on a relief map, and they can study as if they walk in the map actually. In this research, we work on the basic construction of the courseware system, and setting up the information to use this courseware system. Also we work on the event detections, and the judgments of the situations. Investigation of functional safety methods in embedded systems Functional safety is a concept regarding safety, which means even though the device has some problems or failures, the system should have some ways to guarantee people/equipment get less damages than a designed level. Concepts and methods of functional safety have been used in many traditional industries, such as nuclear energy industry, railway, etc. for years, but have not been well used in ubiquitous systems. In this project, we compare the difference of ubiquitous system with the systems used in traditional industries. Then we pose some problems which should be solved for the functional safety in ubiquitous environment and discuss some ideas for solving the problems. RIDEE(Realtime Interactive Distance Education Environment) In this research, the research support system, RIDEE system, had been used in CFS2006 for the support of real-time distance classes performed between a software company in Tokyo and our university. A problem has been found last year that it takes long time for RIDEE system to detect a failed computer in it. Therefore when the number of computers used in RIDEE was too large and one computer broke down, the performance of RIDEE system will be lost. This problem should be solved to make RIDEE system more scalable. Network Camera Smart Control In this research, we have developed a network camera driver for our research support system based on the idea of Virtual Surface Based Control. By this new component, the network camera can be controlled by a OS independent Java application program. Education Courses Members of our laboratory taught the following courses in AY2004. Undergraduate courses Communication Networks Computer Languages Algorithm and Data Structure Graduate courses Computer Communications and Networking (801) Distributed Algorithms (808) Supervising students 3 Ph.D students, 7 master students, 13 seniors did their research work under the supervision of the professors in the lab. Some of them made presentation in international conferences, and other in domestic conferences. Theses 1 Ph.D, 3 Masters, and 10 seniors finished their theses in AY2006 and graduated. SCCP SCCP titled �hubiquitous applications�h in this year were held. Around 8 students attended the projects. SCCP2006 titled �hSupporting PC-Koshien by Java�h were held, attended by about 8 students. Contribution to local region Professors of this laboratory helped for preparation and operation of U. Aizu Computer Science Summer Camp. Professor Aiguo He made big contribution to the PC KOSHIEN (PC contest sponsored by the Fukushima prefecture). Professor Aiguo He gave an off-campus lecture to a high-school in the Fukushima prefecture).
