International Relations
International Project on Text Mining
Last year, we started an international project on Text Mining. Our partner is
the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Control Processes Saint Petersburg State
University, Russia. Results of our joint research were presented at The 6th IEEE
Conference on Computer and Information Technology (CIT 2006), Korea, September
2006, and at The 9th International Conference on Humans and Computers (HC
2006), September Japan, September 2006.
Exchange of undergraduate students
Our undergraduate student Mr. Yoshiroh Takanashi visited Saint Petersburg State
University, Russia in April 2006 and presented his paper at the XXXVII Conference
on Control Processes and Stability. Russian undergraduate student Ms.
Elena Smirnova attended the HC 2006 conference in September 2006. This annual conference is organized by our university. This exchange of students was done in
accordance with our agreement with Saint Petersburg State University.
Coordination Meeting
In September 2006, prof. Klyuev visited Saint Petersburg, met members of the
Information Retrieval Group, professors and Administration of Faculty of Applied
Mathematics Control Processes, Saint Petersburg State University. Key results of
these discussions are as follows:
- Parties discussed the current achievements and agreed to continue cooperation
in the field of text mining. Parties agreed that the first year of collaboration
was successful: Results of joint research were presented and published
in the proceedings of two high rank conferences.
- Parties defined the priority topics in joint research on text mining and defined
the short term perspective.
- Parties also agreed to exchange 1 or 2 students next year to attend the
International XXXVIII Conference on Control Processes and Stability, April
2007, S.Petersburg, Russia and the 10th International Conference on Humans
and Computers, Aizu, Japan, December 2007.
- To implement item 3, Parties agreed to make reasonable efforts to develop,
and attempt to provide funding to cover local expenses for students (Russian
side for Japanese students and Japanese side for Russian students). Each
side will find funds to cover airfare for their students.
- Our Russian partner proposed to put a report on our meeting on the department
Web site. This report in Russian including photos is available at

These aforementioned activities are supported by the Center for Strategy of
International Programs of the University of Aizu. The Software Engineering Lab
plays a key pole in these activities.
