1. JSPS DC and PD Program Guidelines for AY2025

Note: If you need any questions and supports, such as filling in forms in Japanese, please feel free to contact to, yasu-abe@u-aizu.ac.jp or opm@u-aizu.ac.jp. Please do not contact JSPS directly.

JSPS(Japan Society for Promotion of Science) is accepting the online application for Research Fellowship for Young Scientists for AY2025.

The appointment record will be highly appreciated as a researcher. Doctoral student who wish to get a research position, please apply for it aggressively.

Our university has a regulation(※) that states the selected JSPS DC fellow who has completed the doctoral program will be hired as a full-time assistant professor. ※ Regulations 147 - 教員の採用及び助教から准教授への昇任について (Japanese) Translation in English

Beginning with the 2025 application, an English version of the application guidelines and other materials will be provided. Please read these materials carefully before applying.

1.1. DC program

Students who enrolled in the doctoral program for less than 36 months as of April 1, 2025, are eligible to apply for the program.

Please check the JSPS application guide and FAQ for eligibility requirements.

  • DC1 program: Student enrolled in the doctoral program for less than 12 months as of April 1, 2025.

    • Students who will enter the doctoral program in October 2024 or April 2025 are eligible to apply for DC1.

  • DC2 program: Student enrolled in the doctoral program for more than 12 but less than 36 months as of April 1, 2025.

    • Students who are enrolled in a doctoral program as of April 1, 2025 and meet the above requirements may apply for DC2.

Please check the application guidelines for the handling of leave of absence periods.

1.2. PD program

Someone who is Japanese citizen or permanent resident of Japan and within 5 years after conferred a doctoral degree from other institute as of April 1, 2025, are eligible to apply for the program.

Instead of PD, Non-Japanese nationals are eligible for JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for Foreign Researchers, the [P] Program. Please see Guidelines of Postdoctoral and Invitational Fellowships (AY2024) for your reference.

2. Official Information

2.1. Major Changes as of AY2024 Recruitment

For more information, check the official JSPS website.

  • Applicants can now apply for KAKENHI (Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists) at the same time. (Details will be available after mid-March, but the application will be made on the same system as this program, not on e-RAD).

  • (As of AY2025) An English version of the application guidelines will be posted on the official website. Students who are considering applying should be sure to check the guidelines.

3. JSPS Online System for International Collaboration

If you applied for the program previously, please use the ID which you’ve already have. If you do not have your ID to use the online system, please send an e-mail with following information.

If you do not receive a reply within two business days of sending the e-mail, please contact us for confirmation.

  1. Student ID Number

  2. Family Name

  3. Given Name

  4. Date of Birth (YYYY/MM/DD)

For non-Japanese student, these family and given names must be the exactly same as your residence card (在留カード).

3.1. Change the UI Language to English

You can switch the UI language into English.

Even though the UI is in English, please enter your information in Japanese.

Although the Japanese text of general information such as your address will be confirmed by us, regarding the research titles and other research-specific text, we suggest you to consult with your supervisor or a Japanese faculty member in a nearby research field.

3.2. Overview: System Fllow

The applicant will conduct the following procedures.

  1. Select an application form, fill in all fields and proceed by clicking on the Next button. (Still the application form can be edited later.)

  2. Click the "Check application information" button to confirm that the contents of the PDF file are the same as what you entered.

  3. Click on the "Done" button. At this point, an e-mail will be automatically sent to the applicant to confirm his/her contact information.

  4. Confirm that the confirmation e-mail has arrived at your mailbox and click the "Confirmed receipt" button.

Requests for evaluation forms to be prepared for your supervisor cannot be implemented until the "Confirmed receipt" button is clicked. Please complete the application even if it is not perfect and implement the above flow.

After the email confirmation, please proceed the following procedures.

  1. Request your supervisor to prepare an evaluation form (as described above)

  2. Upload attachments prepared in MS-Word

  3. Review and finalize the application file

4. Submission deadline

Deadline: 17:00, Friday, May 17, 2024

All application documents will be composed on or uploaded into the online system.

You must finish to prepare all documents including the recommendation letter by the deadline.

4.1. About Common Mistakes

4.1.1. 1. The "博士の状況" section

Regarding the "博士の状況" section, please fill in the form as follows.

  • Institute Code - 21602

  • Graduate School / Department Code - 0182

  • School Type - 研究科

  • Department Name (Major) - コンピュータ・情報システム学 or 情報技術・プロジェクトマネジメント

  • Type of Doctoral Course - 博士課程(3年生)

4.1.2. 2. The official department / school name

Please confirm the official university website when filling in the official name of graduate school, department, etc. in Japanese.

Regarding the official name of graduate school, "採用後の申請者所属研究科正式名", and other department code, these must be as follows.

Code: 0182 (コンピュータ理工学研究科)

CAIST or other department name is not suitable for the official graduate school name.

4.1.3. 3. Protection of Human Rights and Compliance with Laws and Regulations section

Even if your research activities do not require an ethics or other committee’s review, you must state that your research is not applicable describing the Not Applicable or something.

4.1.4. 4. Contact address

The University of Aizu does not permit students to receive mail at the University’s address, so please be sure to enter your home as your contact address.

Please enter your cell phone number so that JSPS can reach you by phone during the daytime. In this case, there is no need to enter a duplicate cell phone number in the second phone number field.

It is not necessary to fill in the institutional address.

However, if your address is not fixed because you have just entered university or will graduate, please obtain permission from your supervisor and fill in the supervisor’s office as your contact address.

5. Considerations when submitting applications

  • The evaluation form can only be filled out after the application information has been completed and the "連絡先確認済み (E-mail Address Confirmed)" status has been reached. Please allow plenty of time in your schedule to contact your faculty advisor to respond to the request.

  • After submission, please confirm the application status changed to "申請期間受付中 (Received by Applying Organization)".

6. In case you cannot input Japanese text

If you have trouble entering Japanese text on the online form, please contact to yasu-abe@u-aizu.ac.jp or opm@u-aizu.ac.jp as early as possible.
