It is my great pleasure to send you our 2001 Annual Review which reports our activities during the 2001 academic year. Founded in 1993, the University of Aizu is a young and energetic new school, consisting of The School of Computer Science and Engineering (serving approximately 1,000 undergraduate students) and the Graduate School Computer Science and Engineering (serving approximately 200 graduate students), with an international faculty from 12 nations, 40are non-Japanese a truly unique feature among Japanese universities.

Modern human life is supported everywhere by computer chips and computing technologies, and this has made research and education in computer science and computer engineering more important than ever before. Especially important is collaborative projects and activities between universities, industry, and government to enable rapid and eAEcient solutions to the many challenges that surround us. We hope you will join us too in this very important work.
